By July, the Atlantic has usually started its metronome: a wave off Africa every few days, most of them nothing, each one watched. Living well on the Treasure Coast means neither ignoring that rhythm nor living inside the forecast — it means being ready enough, early enough, that a named storm changes your plans for the weekend and not your life.

Hurricane preparation is really three separate disciplines: what you do in the quiet weeks, what you do in the 72-hour window when a track firms up, and what you do in the first 48 hours after — when, quietly, many of the most expensive mistakes are made. This is the whole rhythm, in one place.

The quiet-week layer: readiness you build once a season

Test every shutter and panel — actually deploy them. Put power on the list properly. If you own a generator: run it, stabilize the fuel, and know its load limits. Deploy shutters and panels early, in daylight, before the outer bands arrive with their gusts and their rain. The neighbors on ladders at midnight are the ones who skipped the dry run.

Bring in everything the wind can lift. Stage water — a gallon per person per day, several days deep — fill vehicle tanks and fuel cans, charge every battery in the house, and freeze what you can: a full freezer holds temperature far longer than an empty one.

Stage the paper: insurance policies, the home's records, IDs — physical copies in a dry bag, digital copies somewhere that isn't only a device that needs charging. Refresh your 'before' photos if anything has changed since the quiet-week set.

Then stop. A prepared house does not need heroics after the wind starts. Nothing on this list is worth doing at sixty miles an hour.

The first 48 hours after: where the expensive mistakes live

Safety first and genuinely: treat every downed line as live, every pool of standing water as suspect, and run generators outdoors only, far from windows — carbon monoxide kills more Floridians after storms than the storms do.

Photograph everything before you touch anything. The instinct is to start cleaning; the discipline is to document first. Insurance adjusters work from evidence, and evidence is what the scene looked like before the tarps and the chainsaws.

Mitigate honestly, then stop: tarp the roof breach, dry what's wet, prevent the damage from compounding — your policy requires reasonable mitigation — but leave the permanent repairs for a written, licensed scope. Keep every receipt.

And know that the storm-chasers arrive with the sun. Out-of-state trucks, door knocks, 'free roof inspections,' and papers that assign your insurance benefits away. Florida has tightened assignment-of-benefits law, but the play persists. Sign nothing at the door. Verify any contractor's license at the DBPR site, and let one accountable party coordinate the work — the post-storm chaos is exactly the moment a homeowner most needs a single number to call.
